MacKillop College set to dazzle audiences with Chicago: Teen Edition
MacKillop College is set to dazzle audiences with its highly anticipated school production, Chicago: Teen Edition, running from May 29 to 31 at the Moreno Performing Arts Centre. This adaptation of the legendary musical brings the glitz, glamour, and intrigue of 1920s Chicago to life, featuring a talented student cast and an outstanding live band.
Chicago: Teen Edition follows the intertwined stories of Roxie Hart, an ambitious chorus girl, and Velma Kelly, a famed nightclub performer, both imprisoned for murder in Chicago’s Cook County Jail. After Roxie kills her lover when he tries to end their affair, she manipulates her devoted husband, Amos, into taking the blame-until the truth emerges and she’s arrested.
Inside jail, Roxie meets Velma, who is awaiting trial for killing her husband and sister. Both women vie for the spotlight, using their crimes to gain notoriety and media attention. Their rivalry intensifies as they compete for the services of Billy Flynn, a charismatic and cunning lawyer known for turning his clients into celebrities and manipulating the press to sway public opinion.
With the help of Matron “Mama” Morton, who runs the jail with a system of favors and bribes, Roxie and Velma each plot to outshine the other and secure their acquittals. The story is a sharp satire on fame, media sensationalism, and corruption in the justice system, featuring show-stopping musical numbers and clever choreography.
Ultimately, both women learn that fame is fleeting as the public’s attention shifts, leaving them to reflect on the true cost of their pursuit of stardom.
With the help of the smooth-talking lawyer Billy Flynn, Roxie manipulates the media and the justice system, competing with fellow inmate and vaudeville star Velma Kelly for the spotlight. The musical is a sharp satire of celebrity culture and the pursuit of fame, packed with memorable songs, energetic dance numbers, and plenty of “Razzle Dazzle”.
Leading the cast are Olivia Perceval as Roxie Hart, Gianne Salvador as Velma Kelly, and Edin Kennedy-Cupples as Billy Flynn, each bringing charisma and depth to these iconic roles. The production is directed by Mr Ed Dolista, with musical direction by Ms Sabrina Yousif, who heads the exceptional band supporting the show.
