Geoghegan Library – Term 1 News
It has been a fantastic start to the year in the Library this term, especially for our middle school readers and researchers. In fact, the 2024 Year 7 cohort are an amazing group of readers’ and it is fabulous to witness that, despite the range of technological games and other distractions in our Brave New World, our students are still enjoying their books and see reading as a quality and worthwhile past-time.
This year, all Year 7 MacKillop students have been enrolled in the Victorian Premier’s Reading Challenge (VPRC or PRC), they all have their own individual reading log and the Library staff will be tracking their reading. The Challenge is 10 books from the Premier’s List and 5 x personal choice. It is open to any student at MacKillop and we are also happy to register and track the reading of students in Years 8-10. You can access our Libguide about all things PRC, including their booklist, here. (Student Login required to access)
During the 7’s library reading classes (1 x timetabled class per cycle), I have the delightful job of talking to the students about their reading tastes and interests while I “verify” the books they have read for the Premier’s Reading Challenge. Through these conversations, I have discovered that “A good girl’s guide to murder” / by Holly Jackson and “The summer I turned pretty” / by Jenny Han would have to be amongst the most popular stories today for many girls; while anything Percy Jackson / by Rick Riordan and The Hunger Games / Suzanne Collins, as well as the Manga and Graphic Novels are the top picks for the boys.
If you are looking for an exciting read during the Easter break, why not have a browse through the Year 7 Reading Booklet, 2024. I can testify that the majority of the books here are not only age appropriate but a darn good, engaging, page turning read!
Wishing you a very Happy Easter and wonderful break and we’re looking forward to seeing you in the Library in Term 2.
Happy Reading,
Susan Robertson
Head of Library
